Common Answers to Questions We Hear
If you are new to Chiropractic Treatment then its common to have some questions. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions at our Chiropractic Clinics.
What does a chiropractor do?
When assisting patients, chiropractors operate similarly to other health professionals, including General Practitioners (GPs), and Physiotherapists. They conduct assessments, formulate care plans tailored to the patient’s needs, and offer guidance on future management strategies. This approach ensures comprehensive and personalised care aligned with the patient’s well-being.
World Health Organisation defines it as: “A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on subluxations.”
World Health Organization, Guidelines on Chiropractic, 2005
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments are commonly used to help with conditions such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, reduce spinal stiffness, and other musculoskeletal issues. It’s essential for individuals considering chiropractic care to consult with a qualified chiropractor to determine the appropriateness of adjustments for their specific health needs.
A chiropractic adjustment, also known as an adjustment or manipulation, is a manual procedure performed by chiropractors. During an adjustment, the chiropractor applies a controlled, sudden force to a specific joint, typically in the spine or other parts of the body, with the aim of improving joint mobility, relieving pain, and promoting overall function. The adjustment is often accompanied by a cracking or popping sound, which is the release of gas bubbles in the joint fluid. This is called a cavitation.
How are chiropractors educated?
In Australia, chiropractors undergo a rigorous and standardised training process to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice safely and effectively. The training typically involves the following steps:
- Education: Individuals aspiring to become chiropractors must complete a bachelor’s degree in chiropractic. This undergraduate program typically five years to complete.
- Accredited Chiropractic Program: The Bachelor’s degree must be obtained from a university with an accredited chiropractic program. Accreditation ensures that the program meets specific standards set by the Chiropractic Board of Australia and is recognised by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Clinical Experience: Chiropractic students are required to complete a certain number of supervised clinical hours as part of their training. This hands-on experience allows them to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting under the guidance of experienced chiropractors.

Chiropractic care is generally considered safe when performed by qualified and trained practitioners. The majority of people who undergo chiropractic treatments experience relief from musculoskeletal issues without significant adverse effects. However, as with any form of healthcare, there are some considerations to keep in mind: Like any medical intervention, there is a small risk of adverse events associated with chiropractic adjustments. These can include short-term discomfort, soreness, or rare instances of more serious complications. However, serious adverse events are extremely rare. This is why we obtain a detailed medical history, conduct a thorough examination and assessment before providing treatment. If you have any underlying health conditions or concerns, it’s crucial to discuss them with your healthcare provider before seeking chiropractic care.
