Things We Treat

Hip Pain / Bursitis

Lateral hip pain and gluteal tendinopathy that hurts on the side you sleep on.

Pain on the outside of the hip is commonly labelled bursitis, though current understanding suggests the gluteal tendons are usually the primary source, with the bursa irritated secondarily.

It's most often described as pain over the bony point of the hip, particularly when lying on that side, climbing stairs or standing on one leg.

Common symptoms

  • Pain over the outside of the hip
  • Difficulty lying on the affected side
  • Pain with stairs, hills or getting out of a car
  • Aching that spreads down the outside of the thigh
  • Stiffness after sitting for long periods

Common causes

  • Compressive positions such as crossing the legs or sleeping side-on
  • Rapid increases in walking or running volume
  • Weakness through the gluteal muscles
  • Hip and pelvic control deficits
  • Previous hip or lower back injury

How we can help

  • Assessment identifies whether the tendon, bursa, joint or lower back is the main driver of your pain.
  • Care typically involves reducing compressive loads, hands-on treatment for symptom relief and a structured gluteal strengthening program, with shockwave therapy available at Bundoora for persistent presentations.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stretch my hip?
Aggressive stretching across the body can compress the gluteal tendons and worsen symptoms. Your practitioner will show you which movements to favour and which to limit early on.
Do I need a referral to book?
No referral is needed to see our chiropractors, massage therapists or Chinese medicine practitioners. You can book online at Richmond or Bundoora, or call our team if you're unsure who to see.
Can I claim my appointment on private health?
If your extras cover the service, you can claim on the spot using HICAPS at either clinic and pay only the gap.
