Things We Treat

Plantar Fasciitis

Heel pain that bites with the first steps in the morning.

Plantar fasciitis — more accurately plantar heel pain — involves irritation of the thick band of tissue running along the sole of the foot where it attaches to the heel.

The hallmark is sharp heel pain with the first steps in the morning or after sitting, which often eases as you warm up and returns later in the day.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp heel pain with the first steps of the day
  • Pain that eases with movement then returns after rest
  • Tenderness under the inside of the heel
  • Discomfort standing for long periods
  • Tightness through the calf and arch

Common causes

  • Increases in walking, running or standing time
  • Unsupportive or worn-out footwear
  • Reduced calf and foot strength
  • Limited ankle range of motion
  • Body weight changes and occupational load

How we can help

  • We assess your foot, ankle, calf strength and footwear, and check for other causes of heel pain such as nerve irritation.
  • Management usually combines load management, calf and foot strengthening, hands-on therapy and footwear advice. Radial Shockwave Therapy at Bundoora is a well-recognised option for stubborn plantar heel pain.

Treatments we may use

Frequently asked questions

Do heel spurs cause the pain?
Heel spurs are commonly found on imaging in people without any pain at all, so the spur itself is rarely the cause. Treatment targets the tissue and the loads placed on it.
Should I keep running?
Often you can continue with reduced volume rather than stopping altogether. Your practitioner will help you set the right level.
Can I claim my appointment on private health?
If your extras cover the service, you can claim on the spot using HICAPS at either clinic and pay only the gap.
