Desk Job, Sore Neck? What Actually Helps

If you finish most work days rubbing the base of your neck or your shoulders, you're not alone. Desk-related neck pain is one of the most common presentations we treat — and it tends to creep up gradually until one day turning your head to reverse the car properly hurts.

Why sitting loads your neck

Your head is heavy, and your neck muscles are designed to hold it balanced over your shoulders — not craned forward towards a screen. For every few centimetres your head drifts forward, the load on your neck muscles and joints increases significantly.

Add static posture (muscles holding one position for hours), stress-related tension, and screens set too low, and you have the classic recipe: stiff neck joints, overloaded muscles at the base of the skull, and pain that can refer into headaches.

Changes that genuinely help

  • Raise your screen so the top third is at eye level — a laptop stand plus external keyboard is ideal
  • Move every 30–45 minutes, even briefly; set a timer if you need to
  • Do gentle chin tucks: draw your head straight back (like making a double chin), hold 5 seconds, repeat 10 times
  • Stretch your chest and shoulders — tight pecs pull your posture forward
  • Check your pillow: your neck should be neutral, not propped up or kinked

When self-care isn't enough

Movement breaks and ergonomics help prevent pain, but once joints have stiffened and muscles have been overloaded for months, they often need hands-on treatment to settle. Signs it's time to get assessed include pain lasting more than a couple of weeks, recurring headaches, pins and needles, or pain that's getting progressively worse.

Chiropractic adjustments restore movement to stiff neck joints, while remedial massage releases the overloaded muscles — together they address both sides of the problem. Your practitioner will also give you exercises specific to your presentation, not generic stretches.
