Your First Chiropractic Visit: What Actually Happens

If you've never seen a chiropractor, it's normal to feel a bit unsure about what the first visit involves. Will it hurt? Will you get 'cracked' on day one? Here's an honest walkthrough of what happens at an initial consultation at our Richmond and Bundoora clinics.

Before you arrive

Book online or call the clinic. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. If you have relevant imaging (X-rays, MRI reports) or a referral, bring them along — though a referral isn't needed.

History and conversation

Your chiropractor starts by listening: what hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your work and training loads, previous injuries and your general health. This conversation shapes everything that follows, so be as specific as you can.

Assessment

Next comes a physical assessment: posture and movement screening, orthopaedic and neurological tests where relevant, and palpation of the spine and surrounding muscles. The goal is to identify what's actually driving your symptoms — not just where it hurts.

Explanation and first treatment

Before any treatment, your chiropractor will explain what they've found, what they recommend, and how many sessions they're likely to need. In most cases treatment begins at the first visit and may include adjustments, soft tissue work, dry needling or rehabilitation exercises.

Adjustments are precise and quick. The 'crack' you sometimes hear is simply gas releasing from the joint — it's not bones grinding, and treatment shouldn't be painful. If you're nervous about adjustments, say so: there are low-force alternatives, and you're always in control of what happens.

After your visit

Some people feel immediate relief; others feel mildly sore for a day, similar to post-exercise soreness. You'll leave with clear advice on what to do (and avoid) between visits, and a plan for follow-up if needed.
